You show up for a gig one day, and suddenly the promoter wants you to go on hours before you're originally scheduled to play. So you go up onstage and play your show. Then the promoter tells you to keep playing. So you do…until you run out of songs that you know. But the promoter insists that you play more, so you go back out on stage and make up a song. You start hollering, "Freedom, freedom, freedom…"

Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that you're doing all of this in front of a quarter million people?

And as it turns out, that's the song that you're remembered for. That song becomes your trademark. Your signature.

Well, that's probably not how most musicians would want to lay the foundation for their entire musical career, but it seems to have worked out just fine for Richie Havens.

Richie Havens to appear at Temple Torat Yisrael March 21

Richie Havens, a folk/pop legend, appears in concert at Temple Torat Yisrael, 330 Park Ave., Cranston, R.I., at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 21. The performance is open to the public.

Since his nearly three-hour performance as the opening act at Woodstock in 1969, Havens has made an indelible mark on the folk and pop scenes, recording some 30 albums (his latest in 2008), appearing in concerts across the globe, in films and on television.
