Richie Havens to appear at Temple Torat Yisrael March 21

Richie Havens, a folk/pop legend, appears in concert at Temple Torat Yisrael, 330 Park Ave., Cranston, R.I., at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 21. The performance is open to the public.

Since his nearly three-hour performance as the opening act at Woodstock in 1969, Havens has made an indelible mark on the folk and pop scenes, recording some 30 albums (his latest in 2008), appearing in concerts across the globe, in films and on television.

In 2003, The National Music Council awarded Richie its American Eagle Award for his place in America’s musical heritage and for providing “a rare and inspiring voice of eloquence, integrity and social responsibility.”

Tickets for the Richie Havens performance are $35 and can be purchased at Temple Torat Yisrael, 330 Park Ave., Cranston, R.I. (401-785-1800) or the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, 580 Main Street, East Greenwich, R.I. (401-885-0020).

Havens is the second of the Temple’s four concert spring/winter series. Three-time Grammy winner Tom Chapin appears May 2nd, and folk-duo Mustard’s Retreat appears June 6.

Chapin has recorded some 20 albums, the most recent last year, “Let the Good Times Roll.” The New York Times calls Tom Chapin “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music.” Parents Magazine says “Nobody today is writing and performing better kids’ songs than Chapin.” He has won numerous awards for his family music, and in 2009 received the Magic Penny Award, the Children’s Music Network Tribute to people who have dedicated their lives to empowering children through music. Chapin performs in a family concert at Temple Torat Yisrael on Sunday, May 2 at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for children under 13.

Mustard’s Retreat, a folk-duo from the Midwest, is among the very best family musical acts nationally. They have recorded six albums, and have performed in a variety of venues, including Lincoln Center. “Today’s kids show was pure magic,” wrote the producer at Lincoln Center. “In twenty plus years of concert and festival producing I can’t remember a more enthusiastic, focused audience of kids. You captured the kids’ attention right from the beginning…You had them singing, clapping, and having a great time. Even the stage crew was singing along.” Mustard’s Retreat performs in a family concert at Temple Torat Yisrael on Sunday, June 6, at 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 13.
